Isis Launches Tap And Pay Mobile Wallet Service In New Jersey

After months of delays and no real inkling as to when its product would launch, Isis has finally deployed its “SmartTap” contactless payments system – but not where you might think.

While original plans called for the Isis debut to take place in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Isis, in partnership with Micros, has installed 10 checkout stations at the Amarak cafeteria in Verizon’s corporate headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Through the SmartTap system, any consumers with NFC-enabled mobile devices will be able to pay at the point of sale by simple tapping their smartphones on the terminals.

The location and scale of the launch may seem a little bizarre, but in many ways, any news that avoids the word “delay” should be welcome for Isis. Jamyee Johnson, head of marketing for Isis, indicated that the initial launch sites are still not quite ready to go live.

“The Isis Mobile Wallet is coming soon to Austin and Salt Lake City,” Mr. Johnson told Mobile Commerce Daily. “We will be back in touch later this month to share launch specifics and additional momentum news.”

Those launches will likely be in part facilitated by Isis’ deal with USA Technologies, also announced today, which will have Isis pay USAT to equip 7,500 vending machines with Isis-compatible technology.
