There will be no more delays.
After several setbacks thanks to NFC’s slow rate of adoption, a shift in transaction responsibilities and more, Isis has finally launched its mobile wallet pilot in Austin, TX and Salt Lake City, UT.
“The launch of the Isis Mobile Wallet in Austin and Salt Lake City represents a milestone for both Isis and the mobile commerce industry,” said Ryan Hughes, Isis’ chief marketing officer. “With as many as 20 Isis Ready handsets headed to market by year end, we are experiencing an unprecedented level of support for NFC and consumer choice.”
In order to use Isis, consumers must obtain a SIM card from AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA or Verizon Wireless, download Isis’ mobile wallet app and then load an eligible card to his or her Isis account.
The Isis launch is significant in that its mobile wallet is based on an NFC system – the merits of which have been debated ad-nauseum. While NFC has yet to become widely adopted by merchants or consumers, many companies feel as though it’s the technology that will come to dominate the payments space.
Isis was originally scheduled to launch its Austin and Salt Lake City pilot in the first half of 2012. That deadline was them moved to September, then unofficially “early October,” then the October 22 deadline announced last week.
NFC World also noted that as part of Utah launch, Isis users will be able to ride Utah Transit Authority bus and rail services for free.
