Gimena Diaz also spoke on the importance of the company’s mobile strategy. She spoke on the growing market of mobile transactions, going from $4 bn in 2011 to a predicted $10 bn for 2012. She also noted the incredible jump from $750m in 2010.

In France, 24% of their users have carried out a transaction through a mobile. Therefore they are gearing their strategy in the country towards that channel. They want to provide their clients with seamless integrated mobile payment experiences and are integrating them with services such as Prestashop and Boosket.

When asked about its competitors, such as newcomer Square, Gimena Diaz brushed off any worries and argued that Paypal has been providing and testing innovative payments constantly since they launched fourteen years ago. She spoke of two innovative services they are providing in Europe: a mobile booking and ordering service at Pizza Express in the UK and McDonald’s famous payments trial in France.

On the possibility of adopting NFC technology in the near future the PayPal representative was reticent and argued for the need of a more widespread adoption and confidence on the technology before the company dips its feet in contactless payments.

It seems PayPal will continue to actively pursue its mobile strategy in 2013, but will remain cautious when it comes to other technologies.
