German Gas Goes Contactless With Visa

Starting in the spring of 2014, German customers who go to Shell stations in the country will be able to make payments using their mobile phone or contactless card with Visa, reported Finextra. Visa’s solution will be introduced to all 2,200 Shell petrol stations in Germany. Customers using their Visa contactless card or NFC-enabled smartphone can make indoor payments. Customers with a contactless V Pay debit card will also be able to participate in the new program.

Those making payments of up to €25 do so with their contactless device without entering their PIN or providing a signature. Higher value payments will need a PIN or a signature to complete the transaction.

The head of Shell’s retail business in Germany, Jörg Wienke, said, “Shell stations not only offer high quality fuel, but also products for daily use. In the near future, our customers will be able to pay with Visa contactless cards in a convenient, fast and easy way when buying petrol as well as coffee, drinks, snacks or magazines. Thereby, queues at the counter will be shorter and our service quality will further increase.”
