NCR Targeting Small Brick-and-Mortars with New Loyalty App

05 March 2014

Last year NCR moved to directly challenge companies like Square with the release of its take on the virtual cash register: Silver. Silver is a set of retail hardware and software applications that run off of an iPad. Now NCR is going after the loyalty platform market. The newest software package built into Silver give businesses a tool to create and run rewards programs with nothing more complicated than an iPad. The new software will allow companies to track customers’ purchase histories and shopping behaviors without releasing their data to a third-party vendor.
“We already had some of the marketing tools, but now it’s a platform businesses can use to go out and build customer relationships,” GM of NCR’s small business division Justin Hotard told GigaOM
So far growth for NCR’s new platform has been slow. With 8 million small businesses up for grabs – according to the NCR’s estimate – the 10,000 terminals it has in place barely represent a dent in the market. The company, however, believes of the POS market is fluid, ever changing and wide-open for innovative players.
