When it Doubt, Blame Apple For Your Economic Trials and Tribulations

As it turns out, the Fins are not participating in the world’s love affair with Apple.

Alexander Stubb, The Finnish prime minister, claimed today that Apple is responsible for bringing down two of Finland’s largest industries, Nokia and paper. In an interview with  CNBC Stubb said “The iPhone killed Nokia and the iPad killed the paper industry, but we’ll make a comeback.”

This isn’t the first time he’s accused Apple of causing economic issues for Finland. Stubb was quoted back in July stating, “Steve Jobs took our jobs.”

Apple has been paying Nokia an undisclosed amount for years now, under IP licensing agreements. Then CEO, Stephen Elop,  reported the company would make over $650 million in patent licensing deals in 2013. Given that, it might be a touch unfair for Nokia to blame Apple wholesale for its declining fortunes in recent years.

The impact on the iPad on paper production, on the other hand, just seems at face to be pretty outlandish. Globally this year;  200 million tablets will be shipped. Our global population is over 7 billion and presumably most of those people will still be using paper.
