IDEX Lands Global Biometric Card Deal

IDEX ASA, a company that specializes in fingerprint imaging and recognition technology, has formed a new partnership with a global payments company to help create an international biometric payment card program.

While the company announced the news yesterday (June 30), it did not reveal the name of the global payments company. But through the deal, IDEX plans to bring its patented off-chip technology to create a flexible fingerprint sensor to help integrate smart cards. By using its proprietary matching algorithms, its technology can be used in smaller, more secure processors that align with global EMV security standards — while still maintaining the fingerprint image on the payments card. It will also use its touch and swipe sensor platform technology.

“We are very pleased to have been selected for this global company biometric card initiative enabled by our compelling low-cost, turnkey fingerprint sensor solutions. The program will commence development during 2015. This partnership is expected to enable IDEX to secure a leading position in this emerging mass market for fingerprint sensor-based biometric cards,” Dr. Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEX, said in a press release.

And as fingerprint authentication becomes more accessible to mobile application developers and service providers, fingerprint sensor manufacturers expect to see a much wider adoption of the security feature. Currently, the technology is most often found on high-end smartphones from companies like Apple and Samsung, but with the price to make fingerprint sensors dropping and a broader use of the software overall, it may be only a matter of time before the feature becomes commonplace on more smartphones.

According to IDEX’s perspective on the market, “mass adoption of fingerprint sensors in the mobile market and recent developments of mobile payment applications are changing the paradigm for security and convenience by eliminating PINs and passwords.” IDEX believes it has validated the concept behind its swipe sensor technology on its flexible ISO-compliant cards.
