Samsung Offers ‘Test Drive’ To Get iPhone Switchers

Samsung’s latest ploy to steal away Apple’s customer base might have just proven to be its best attempt to get back at Apple with the launch of its “Ultimate Test Drive” offer.

Samsung’s Ultimate Test Drive, which lets iPhone users try out the Samsung Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 edge+ or Galaxy S6 edge for just $1 for a 30-day trial period, proved to be so successful that within 72 hours of its launch, the company had to hit the brakes on its campaign due to “overwhelming demand.”

The campaign, which was launched on Friday (Aug. 21), said on its website, “For just one dollar, you can try one of our latest Samsung phones for 30 days with no obligation. Your test drive kit will come with the phone of your choice, an activated sim card and a step-by-step guide to help you start your test drive. After 30 days, if you buy a qualifying Samsung device, there’s even more love in store for you.”

Curious users willing to try out the 30-day trial were being offered the Samsung device with a data plan powered by a choice of providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, and even the ability to transfer all the data stored on their iPhone to their new device using a smart switch cable provided in a box.

While the deal might sound too good to be true, Samsung ensured that it doesn’t play out as a rookie move. The company verified the interested participants to be iPhone users through a registration process on its website, SamsungPromotions.com, and plans on charging users $100 to full cost for any damaged returns on the user’s credit card registered on the website.

For now, the company is out of test phones, the website says. “Please keep checking back for available phones.”

With the market response, the campaign is so far the most successful attempt from Samsung to get back at Apple after losing the design patent battle in a U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals last week.

The company was initially required to pay more than $1 billion in damages but is now expected to pay around $548 million to Apple after years of appeals and hearings.
