Google Shopping Can Save Shoppers Money Over Amazon

Everyone thinks Amazon is the way to go when trying to save money, but a new study shows that Google Shopping can be the cheaper route for cost-conscious shoppers.

According to a new study by 360pi, the Canadian price monitoring company, while more than half of U.S. shoppers and 84 percent of those buying holiday gifts check Amazon first before making a purchase, those shoppers that stay on Amazon wouldn’t save as much money, the study found.

The research firm looked at the prices of 750 of Amazon’s Best Sellers across nine product categories and compared them to Google Shopping. The study found Google Shopping advertisers had a lower price on the items 59 percent of the time when compared to Amazon prices. Google Shopping had lower prices 58 percent when compared to Amazon marketplace sellers. Amazon had the lowest price 25 percent of the time, the report noted.

“When someone wants to research something they start on Google; when they want to buy something they start on Amazon. Google knows this and needs Google Shopping to succeed — as much from an opportunity as a threat perspective,” said Jenn Markey, vice president of marketing at 360pi, in a press release. “With endless opportunities for product placement in its core search business, Google is upping the ante with aggressive pricing on Google Shopping and hoping shoppers take notice.”

For the report, 360pi looked at Amazon Best Sellers in beauty and health; electronics and computers; household; home and garden; movies, music and games; office and school supplies; sports and outdoors; tools and home improvement; and toys and games. 360pi said the prices reflect the lowest seller available at the time of capture, including flash sales and temporary price reductions. Even a one cent price differential was deemed relevant to this analysis, according to 360pi.
