As digital continues to be a pervasive force in nearly everyone’s daily lives, many in international government have likely begun to wonder how and if it should be regulated.

This past weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel shared her thoughts on this issue and said the international digital arena needs regulations similar to those in the financial and trade markets.

“We still have no international rules. Otherwise some provider could emerge…. That’s an island, and from which things could be done, relevant to security, that could destroy an entire system. On this question of the rules-based handling of it, we’re still right at the start,” said Merkel.

In the Group of 20’s summit this July, Germany is looking to put together a digital policy plan that also includes global efforts to push fast internet speeds forward.
