CSI, MasterCard Build on Partnership, Redouble B2B Efforts

On the 12th anniversary of their partnership, MasterCard and CSI are breaking news about how they will help banks and corporate users realize the benefits of virtual cards to manage their accounts payables.

Here are a few of the specifics as told by the two companies themselves: David Disque, senior vice president and director of operations at CSI and Dave Peraino, group head of business-to-business (B2B) payments at MasterCard.

PYMNTS.com: What new products and solutions are MasterCard and CSI developing?

David Disque, CSI: You’re going to see a lot of development on the integration of purchase control within our suite of products. Our mobile product is now being integrated within purchase control to bring a better user experience to our end-corporates as well as any issuing banks that have this desire to license and use this technology. In a third phase, you’re going to see some additional development in the area of utilizing virtual cards through our software, complemented by purchase control to facilitate travel transactions as well.

Dave Peraino, MasterCard: I think the technology will continue to expand corporate clients’ ability to manage, control and get visibility into their virtual card programs, and really enable them to make their accounts payable solutions more efficient… I think the technology integration is great, and I think the second half of it that I think will be a continued advantage for MasterCard and for CSI is the B2B expertise that we can both bring to the table to help corporate clients grow their book.

PYMNTS.com: How does the partnership advance MasterCard’s network?

Dave Peraino, MasterCard: There are a number of issuers in the U.S. and Canada who don’t currently offer a virtual card solution for the payable space. They are really not geared up with resources and with a process to support their corporate clients with a virtual card solution. We see a benefit with combining Purchase Control and CSI’s expertise, and implementing and optimizing those corporate programs. CSI has a proven methodology, and I think that that to me is what’s exciting.

PYMNTS.com: Why is CSI excited about the partnership?

David Disque, CSI:
[We’re combining] great technology with a tremendous network and a partner that’s innovating and focused on the B2B payment space, in conjunction with great, well-thought out implementation services, enablement services, day-to-day customer support services. As a matter of fact, all of our team members are AP certified, so they fully understand what it’s like to sit on the other end of the phone with the end-corporates who are supporting those issuers. It really brings a tremendous product and offering together.

PYMNTS.com: How are corporations using virtual cards today, and how do you see that evolving in the future?

David Disque, CSI: As this product matures, I think the keys are enhancements of the software so that the integration touchpoint can be facilitated easier. The enablement piece, making sure there’s a strong enablement effort behind these programs, and that those corporations are getting supported well. Then, I think the third piece of this particular industry and this transition of card to check-type payment matures is going to be building stronger relationships with the vendors, providing better integration with the vendors, as well as the end-corporates, and a better sharing of data and capture.

Dave Peraino, MasterCard: Our issuers globally have been using purchase control, and adopting purchase control to use virtual card, and we see it in a lot of different spaces. We’re seeing it in areas like travel, where today there is broad acceptance, and travel companies and online travel providers are looking for ways to make the process more efficient. We’re seeing it in some higher-ticket areas like labor, healthcare [and] insurance, where historically the payment process has been somewhat inefficient.
