Staples Adapts To Internet Age With Omnichannel Stores

Office supply chain Staples has announced that the two newest of its roughly 1,500 stores are dramatically redesigned for the Internet age, Internet Retailer reports.

Called “omnichannel stores,” the retail outlets are half the size of the company’s traditional stores and allow employees to finalize sales from mobile devices in store aisles. Customers can pick up in-store oOrders made in the store can be picked up by customers at storage lockers located within the stores.

Staples said this will allow its workers to consistently monitor inventory levels and instantly provide product information.

“The omnichannel stores have 6,000 to 7,000 of the retailer’s best-performing SKUs, such as office chairs, excluding large items that sell better online, like desks,” a spokesman for the company noted.

The company said it plans to update 45 of its existing stores to omnichannel stores.
