Google Wallet appeared to have gained some positive momentum at the end of last week, when it said it had updated its mobile payment platform to accept any payment card issued by one of the four major U.S. payment networks.
But then American Express added a sour note to what was supposed to be a happy tune, telling multiple news outlets that the company had never agreed to have its cards utilized by Google’s application.
“Right now, American Express does not have an agreement with Google for our cards to be used in the Google mobile wallet,” said Bradley Minor, vice president of social media, in an interview with TechCrunch. The company’s reservation: “We want to make sure Google’s mobile wallet product meets the standards we set for our card members in terms of transparency and clarity about transaction detail.”
Google has since said it is in “active discussions” with Amex to resolve the issue.
