A new iPhone app, involvement with the Merchant Customer Exchange and rumors of an in-house mobile payments system are at the center of the company’s digital growth plan. Existing strategies such as branded currency will be worked into the new model.

“Merchant apps are an excellent engagement strategy and an effective tool for combating showrooming,” Jordan McKee, an analyst from Boston-based Yankee Group, told the Daily in an interview.
