Digital Citizens Alliance, an internet safety research group, announced earlier this week that it had found dozens of videos on YouTube of individuals selling stolen credit card data.
Bloomberg cited research from the organization’s 13-page report, which said that a search for how to get valid 2014 credit card numbers brought back almost 16,000 results.
Digital Citizens Alliance Executive Director Tom Galvin spoke with Bloomberg over the phone, and commented on the findings.
“We were stunned at what we found,” Galvin said. “We found dozens, if not hundreds, of examples of stolen credit cards being sold on YouTube.”
In one of the videos, stolen credit card information is posted next to an ad for Target Corp. Target suffered a massive data breach back in December, and is still working to salvage its reputation and reassure customers.
Galvin told Bloomberg that he called one of the sellers in the videos, and was offered prices ranging from $20 each for 10 cards, or $10 each for 100 cards. The seller also instructed Galvin where to use the stolen data, and even offered to sell him a machine that would make fake credit cards.
