Uber Celebrates The Fourth Of July By Making Helicopters Ride-Shareable

Of the many things said about ride-sharing pioneer Uber, “afraid to think out-side the box,” has never been one of them. Between kittens, Christmas Trees and even the occasional wedding—Uber is ready to give anyone – or really anything – a ride if there is a profit to be turned from it.

    So it really makes sense that the company has looked to the sky, and a partnership with Blade – the self-proclaimed Uber of helicopter bookings—to help people shuttle themselves, via helicopter, from Manhattan to the Hamptons and Mantauk later today.

    Anyone with $2,500 to spare can book a full load on a Euroopter AS350 using Uber.  After booking through the Uber app (which will send users to the Blade app), the chopper will pick riders up in Midtown Manhattan and safely land them at a beach resort.

    This is Uber’s second one-day helicopter promotion, when last year Uber partnered with Liberty Helicopters, whose fleet underpins Blade.  If all goes well, Uber has hinted it might consider making chopper rides a permanent feature.

    “I would see this as an experiment, as it was last year,” Josh Mohrer, Uber’s general manager for New York said, reports The New York Times. “If the response from people who use the Uber app is very strong, and users suggest doing it every weekend, we can make that happen.”
