Total eCommerce Sales for 2010 Estimated at $165.4B

Washington, D.C. (February 17, 2011)-The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the fourth quarter of 2010, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $44.1 billion, an increase of 5.6 percent (±2.3%) from the third quarter of 2010. Total retail sales for the fourth quarter of 2010 were estimated at $1,014.4 billion, an increase of 3.6 percent (±0.4%) from the third quarter of 2010. The fourth quarter 2010 e-commerce estimate increased 16.1 percent (±1.8%) from the fourth quarter of 2009 while total retail sales increased 8.1 percent (±0.7%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the fourth quarter of 2010 accounted for 4.3 percent of total sales.

    On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the fourth quarter of 2010 totaled $52.6 billion, an increase of 35.5 percent (±2.3%) from the third quarter of 2010. The fourth quarter 2010 e-commerce estimate increased 16.3 percent (±1.8%) from the fourth quarter of 2009 while total retail sales increased 7.9 percent (±0.7%) in the same period. Ecommerce sales in the fourth quarter of 2010 accounted for 4.9 percent of total sales.

    Total e-commerce sales for 2010 were estimated at $165.4 billion, an increase of 14.8 percent (±2.3%) from 2009. Total retail sales in 2010 increased 7.0 percent (±0.5%) from 2009. E-commerce sales in 2010 accounted for 4.2 percent of total sales. Ecommerce sales in 2009 accounted for 3.9 percent of total sales.
