Apple Pay’s Next Use Case: Hotel Door Keys

Apple is talking with multiple companies about using Apple Pay’s NFC to replace public transit tickets as well as building keycards, according to a report in The Information. Apple is talking with HID Global and Cubic, which both specialize in making secure keycard building access and transit fare systems, the story reported.

    Developers today are not permitted to tap into NFC used in both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, as it remains exclusive to Apple Pay. The feature could, however, be open to select partners and give developers the option to use the feature within their applications.

    Apple has already revealed a partnership with Starwoods Hotels where Apple users have the option of replacing hotel keycards with their Apple Watch. This new feature will however will use Bluetooth rather than NFC.
