AWS Launches Data Management Service Focused on Good Governance

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a data management service that balances access and control.

The new Amazon DataZone helps customers catalog, discover, share and govern data across their organization — including data stored by AWS, on premises or by third-party sources — Amazon said Tuesday (Nov. 29) in a press release.

With this new service, administrators and data stewards can use fine-grained controls to ensure data is accessed within the right privileges and context, while users of data can more easily discover and use it, according to the release.

“Good governance is the foundation that makes data accessible to the entire organization, but we often hear from customers that it is difficult to strike the right balance between making data discoverable and maintaining control,” Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of databases, analytics and machine learning at AWS, said in the release. “With Amazon DataZone, customers can use a single service that balances strong governance controls with streamlined access to make it easy to find, organize and collaborate with data.”

Data producers can use the new service’s web portal to set up their own business data catalog, according to the press release.

Once they’ve done that, data consumers can use the portal to search and discover assets. They can then create a shared space in the web portal in which they can add different datasets and share access with colleagues, the release said.

Amazon DataZone is integrated with AWS analytics services and provides application programming interfaces (APIs) to integrate with custom solutions or partners, per the release.

“Amazon DataZone sets data free across the organization, so every employee can help drive new insights to maximize its value,” Sivasubramanian said.

As PYMNTS reported in July, earnings reports from the likes of Google and Amazon — and hypergrowth in their respective cloud operations, including AWS — show the inexorable rise of the digital way of life.
