The final version of iOS 27 could differ from that described in the report because Apple often tests multiple designs before selecting the final one, according to the report.
The features shared with Bloomberg by people with knowledge of the company’s plans include some for Siri that Apple announced in 2024 but later delayed. Among them are the ability of the digital assistant to understand personal data and analyze on-screen content, the report said.
The upgrades will also include a rebuilt AI model that uses Google’s Gemini technology, artificial intelligence-powered web search and a redesigned interface. Apple will also add a dedicated Siri app, per the report.
Apple is also testing integrations for Siri and other AI features with third-party AI agents beyond its existing partnership with OpenAI. The company has tested Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, according to the report.
Beyond the changes to Siri and AI, Apple’s next software updates will add a more customizable Camera app, the ability to create custom passes in the Wallet app, new Apple Intelligence features for the Photos app, and the ability to create automations using natural language with the Shortcuts app, per the report.
Apple did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
PYMNTS reported April 30 that Apple is dealing with the issue of whether it can turn its AI foundation into a more visible agentic AI strategy without giving up the product discipline that built the company.
Because Apple is built around tightly controlled hardware, software and services, the company is still working through where AI, especially agentic AI, fits into its offerings.
Apple is also preparing for a leadership change in which John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, will succeed Tim Cook as CEO. The company announced the change April 20 and said it will be effective Sept. 1. The transition follows a long-term succession planning process.
