Rebel Wilson Advocates BNPL In Afterpay Ad Campaign

The Australian buy now, pay later (BNPL) company Afterpay is advertising its services in a global advertising campaign starring actress Rebel Wilson. It’s the firm’s U.S. TV ad debut.

The ads feature Wilson, the Australian comedy star known for her role in the Pitch Perfect movies, demonstrating why consumers should pay for things with their own money over time instead of accumulating credit card debt and interest.

The Pay Better campaign debuted on Sunday (May 23) during the Billboard Music Awards, with another spot set to air on June 7 during The Bachelorette. Afterpay says the campaign will also include digital, social media and billboard ads, with murals going up in 17 markets around the country.

“Financial health has always been important to me,” Wilson said in a news release. “Paying better to me means paying in a way that benefits me, and also not paying any unnecessary fees or added extras. That’s exactly what Afterpay’s Pay Better is empowering consumers to do.”

The campaign comes after what Afterpay calls a “year of tremendous growth” for the company, which has 17 million customers and processes $1 billion in sales each month, primarily from North American customers.

As PYMNTS reported in April, Afterpay saw record sales for Q3 FY21, with underlying sales up 104 percent compared to the previous corresponding period. In the U.S., those sales increased by 211 percent, and they rose 277 percent in the U.K. on a local currency basis. The company is now considering a public listing in the U.S.

Afterpay will continue its American introduction later this year when it serves as the presenting sponsor for New York Fashion Week. Read Karen Webster’s conversation with Afterpay Co-founder Nick Molnar to learn more.
