Google Debuts New Maps, Photos And Other Connected Economy Features

Google has released a number of updated features, including maps, photos and more, Reuters reported.

The updates are intended to keep up with a world that has become more digitally focused over the past year due to the pandemic, the report stated.

The announcements were made during a Google I/O developer conference, which took place virtually. The updates are meant to boost the company’s smartwatch efforts, currently in competition with other companies like Apple and Microsoft, according to Reuters.

In addition, the updates show that Google is looking to demonstrate its advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), Reuters reported. Those advancements will help users stay connected to the tech giant’s ad-supported or paid services for shopping, communication or entertainment.

Google’s smartwatch operating system will be operated by the company’s recently acquired Fitbit unit along with Samsung, according to Reuters. Both of those companies had used their own systems for years, but together, they might be able to draw in a wider base of developers.

Google also shared a new capability to edit and view in Google Docs and other such work software. Among thee new tools will be one that suggests using inclusive terms in one’s writing as opposed to gendered words, Reuters reported.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has made it a priority to use inclusive language across the company. He said new smartphones would also be working to better identify darker skin tones and curly and wavy hair, according to Reuters.

The new updates will also help customers by navigating them toward “safer” routes, Reuters reported. And, Google Photos will offer more ways to search Google Images for specific options in screenshots.
