Tesco Rolls Out Face ID Banking For iPhone X Users

Tesco Bank announced news on Monday (Nov. 6) that it has revamped its mobile banking app to enable Apple iPhone X customers to utilize facial recognition technology.

In a press release, the company said customers will now be able to login and authenticate payments using Face ID biometrics.

“We know customers love using our mobile banking app to quickly and easily manage their money. This addition illustrates our continued commitment to developing digital services that utilize the latest technologies available, and which really meet our customers’ needs. This is a simple, convenient and helpful development for Tesco Bank customers,” said Grant Bourbousson, Digital & Customer 2020 director, in a press release.

According to Tesco, Monday’s announcement underscores the bank’s goal to offer its customers easy and flexible ways to manage money. The bank said that, to date, it has seen more than 1 million customers register for the mobile app as their preferred method of accessing their bank account. Tesco said it’s confident that the new biometrics feature will further enhance the experience for the customer.

To use Face ID within the mobile banking app, customers have to first ensure the functionality is enabled on their device. They will then be prompted to provide either their passcode or password to confirm their decision to turn on the facial recognition authentication tool. With the update to the mobile app, iPhone X customers can use Face ID for servicing their account, while retaining other security options, including passcodes, Tesco said in the press release.

Tesco is joining a small but growing list of banks that are including facial recognition in their mobile apps as a result of the iPhone X and its Face ID technology. OCBC Bank, the Singapore bank, also announced on Monday that it has rolled out a facial recognition enhancement to its consumer and business banking apps for Apple iPhone X users.

In a press release, OCBC Bank said that by leveraging Apple’s Face ID biometrics technology, OCBC Bank customers who have the new phone can use facial recognition when conducting everyday banking on mobile apps like OCBC Mobile Banking, OCBC OneWealth and OCBC Business Mobile Banking, or when making payments via OCBC Pay Anyone. Customers just need to look at their iPhone X to start banking.
