GE Integrates Nest Protect In Connected Ovens

Another day, another smarter appliance. Just a few days in, and 2017 is already shaping up to be the year of the smart home.

Appliance giant GE has announced that it has integrated its connectable ovens with Nest Protect, makers of smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that use Wi-Fi to alert users’ phones, to bring consumers ovens that can detect oven fires and alert homeowners to the issue.

Nest Protect’s smart detectors alert users in real time and on a user’s smartphone when it detects smoke or CO. Additionally, Nest Protect lets users know exactly where in the home smoke has been detected. After enabling the device, if Nest Protect detects smoke while the connected oven is on, GE Appliances will send a command to turn off the oven.

GE’s Kitchen app will also notify users that the oven has been turned off. If the oven is turned on and Nest detects you are away, Nest will send a command, and GE Appliances will send a push notification to the connected user’s phone.

Paul Surowiec, vice president of cooking products for GE Appliances, was quoted as saying: “Cooking should be an enjoyable experience, but we know that sometimes there are mishaps in the kitchen. Our integration with Nest Protect helps us ensure that our connected oven owners are safer when cooking, especially when the oven is left unattended.”

GE’s suite of Wi-Fi-connected appliances allows users to monitor and maintain their homes from virtually anywhere. As of now, GE’s connected appliance products work with Nest Labs, Amazon’s Alexa, Amazon Dash Replenishment and IFTTT.

This Nest-enabled oven is but the latest endeavor to connect appliances to other devices. Wi-Fi-connected appliances able to connect with Amazon Dash when supplies start to run out are currently being manufactured by Samsung, Whirlpool and Oster. GE introduced its first Dash-ready dishwasher model in October of last year.
