Payroll App Provider Ranking Sees Close Race for Top Spot

Is it payday yet? If you’re watching for a paycheck, or sending them out, there are several apps that can help.

Each month, PYMNTS analyzes these apps, assigns scores and reports the results in the Provider Ranking of Payroll Apps.

There’s a lot of movement in the rankings this month, but it’s not as dramatic as it may seem. A competitor that was tied for first place last time has moved down to second, and that set off a chain reaction as others got bumped out of their previous spots and landed one position lower.

One app swam against the tide, though, moving up one level after adding six points to its previous score. Now, let’s take a closer look.

The Top Five

Holding on to the top spot is Paychex Flex. With a perfect score of 100, this app is again at the head of the pack.

Two points behind with a score of 98 is Paycor. After sharing the top spot last time, this app has fallen back to No. 2.

There’s a bit of a gap in the field as the next competitor is 10 points behind. With a score of 88, Alliance MyPay steps down one level to No. 3.

After another gap in the field, the next contender checks in with a score of 79. This app, QuickBooks Payroll, gets bumped out of its previous position and lands one level lower at No. 4. Still, its score is four points higher than last month, making this app one of this month’s movers and shakers.

Continuing the trend, Zenefits drops one spot to fifth in the rankings. This app has a score of 71.

The Top 10

The next competitor, too, falls back one spot from where it was last month. Rippling is now running sixth with a score of 62.

The chain reaction caused by the movement higher in the rankings continues as Square Payroll moves down one spot, stopping at the seventh position with a score of 52. That’s six points lower than the score it achieved last time.

Moving against the tide, the next competitor gains one spot from where it was last time. Payrollguru is now ranked eighth with a score of 48. That’s six points higher than the score it achieved last time, making it a mover and shaker.

Bumped out of its previous position, RUN Powered By ADP has landed two spots lower. With a score of 47 — eight points lower than the score it achieved last month — this app now stands at No. 9.

Rounding out this month’s top 10 is TriNet. This app, too, has dropped two levels and now ranks tenth with a score of 39.
