2012 Payments Summit

(Pre-conference workshops February 7)
EMV Payments, Mobile Payments and Transit Payments Converge at the 2012 Payments Summit
The 5th Annual Payments Summit builds on a successful history of conference events held in the majestic city at the foothills of the snowcapped Wasatch Mountains. After years of double-digit participation growth, the 2012 conference moves to a larger meeting space to accommodate a more broadly-focused agenda. The Alliance has combined the rapidly growing Mobile and Transit Payments Council Summit with “Roadmap to EMV Payments,” from the Alliance Annual Conference in the Spring, which drew hundreds of attendees to Chicago. The result is a single, large All Payments Event covering every leading transaction platform: Card payments, mobile payments, online payments, and transit payments.
The payments industry is approaching an historic tipping point. EMV, the global standard for payments that is firmly established in Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin America, is coming to the United States, the largest payments ecosystem in the world. Leading U.S. financial institutions have already begun to issue EMV cards for international travelers. Visa’s August announcement about its plan to accelerate the adoption of EMV contact and contactless payments, firmly defines the roadmap forward for NFC mobile payments as well. With pressure rising to begin the migration to EMV and NFC for domestic payments transactions, other U.S. banks, credit unions, issuers and merchants will face a crucial decision: follow suit, or fall behind?

At the same time, millions of consumers will begin to discover a new payment alternative to traditional bank cards in their wallets: Smart phones and mobile wallets with secure NFC payment capabilities. Mobile operators, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and Sprint, have announced plans for payment services that incorporate loyalty cards, coupons, targeted sales offers and much more. One of first payments networks, developed by Isis, will debut in 2012 right in Salt Lake City. At the same time, Google has assembled a formidable group of stakeholder partners including MasterCard, Citi, First Data, and Sprint to challenge the mobile operator lead joint venture. Other US banks including Bank of America and US Bank are pushing forward with their own NFC wallet solutions. Who will be the next organization to step into the NFC spotlight? PayPal? Apple?
Finally, transit operators from major cities nationwide have been building towards a new era of open bank card payments for several years, hoping to move beyond bank card fare payments pilots and begin roll-outs that are expected to include contactless payments cards, stickers, and NFC-enabled mobile devices. Which cities are going to get there first? Which business model will emerge from the many options being explored? Which technology and payments partners are going to come out on top?
These and many other challenging payments questions are going to be discussed and debated during this expanded and extended conference and exhibition event.
