Four-Week Marathon For UK E-Commerce

According to Netnames, this year’s Cyber Monday in the UK is going to be “the busiest day ever in online retail history” in the country. They predict 115 million visits to online retailers – a 36% rise from the same period last year. The country is copying the US and already had a very busy Black Friday, with retailers selling an average of £105 per second online.

Retailer John Lewis saw its morning traffic surge. James Leeson, head of online commercial at John Lewis, said to the Evening Standard, “We think sales by the end of today will be up more than 40 per cent year-on-year and the increase started from first thing this morning. Our distribution centres are reporting that they are very busy.”

Visa Europe too had high predictions for the day, despite a previous flat period in the past couple of weeks. They are predicting that £320 million will be spent on Visa cards online with transactions topping 6.8 million. Commenting on the findings, Dr Steve Perry, Commercial Director at Visa Europe, said: “Data from Visa’s Weekly Christmas Spending Tracker indicate that consumer spend in the UK is flat, meaning that retailers online and on the High Street are going to have to work hard to extract the same level of spend as last year. Hard-pressed consumers are evidently looking for ways to make their money go further this Christmas. This is why we expect a record number of shoppers to seek out bargains and offers online on Monday 3rd December, the UK’s Mega Monday.”

As the next four weeks see an online surge it will be interesting to see whether the mobile channel has caught up in the country.
