PayPal’s European Mobile Innovations

A partnership with Shopgate is the most recent of PayPal’s m-commerce projects. The joint venture will offer mobile commerce solutions for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows phones. PayPal has also made its mobile mark in France, with its McDonald’s mobile payments trial, in the US with its partnership with Discover and in the UK with the introduction of mobile payments at high street fashion retailers.

The company has also been offering less conventional mobile payment solutions, such as the partnership with MoneyGram which will allow customers to withdraw cash through their PayPal account or the association with Sher.pa a voice-enabled personal assistant for Android smartphones. Sher.pa allows its users to send money via PayPal, simply by telling your smartphone to do so, with PayPal’s “Send Money” functionality. While the app is still in beta and available in Spanish only, over 100,000 downloads on its first 14 days seem like a promising start.

It appears that PayPal’s mobile strategy has paid, as eBay has reported a 23% increase in mobile commerce revenue in Q3, mostly attributed to PayPal. In 2011, PayPal totaled $4 billion in mobile payments, a dramatic increase from $750 million in the previous year.
