Square Makes First International Move, Crosses Border To Canada

When Square received a $200 million funding boost in September, the mobile payments startup said it would allocate much of its new financial muscle towards expanding internationally.

Square took that leap yesterday, announcing that its payment service is available in Canada: Square’s first move into the international market.

Canada’s getting the same old Square that two million U.S. consumers and businesses use. The card reader for iOS and Android systems is free and the rate they charge per transaction remains 2.75 percent.

We’re thrilled to introduce Canadian businesses and their customers to the most seamless and enjoyable way to do business,” said Alyssa Cutright, Square’s vice president of international.

Answering where Square goes from here is more difficult. Canada’s an easy move, thanks to its proximity. If Square decided to move to, say, Europe, they could run into technological hurdles, such as chip and pin card readers, which are even more prevalent overseas than up north.

So while it’s easy to conclude that Square will continue its international expansion in the future, it’s harder to predict exactly where it will expand to: though, as Tech Crunch notes, Asia is a popular rumor.
