Holiday Shopping Slows, But Christmas Day Commerce Might Jump

Holiday shopping fell this past weekend, compared to 2012 levels, as consumers pull back on spending just ahead of Christmas Day, Reuters reported on December 23.

Sales were down 7 percent on Friday and Saturday, days which in past years have been comparatively busy.

This decline may reverse direction by Christmas Day, according to Experian. Shoppers are expected to log on by the millions – aided by new smartphones and tablets – to make online purchases.

“Shopping habits are changing, with Christmas Day becoming a significant shopping day during the period,” James Murray, Experian’s digital insight manager for marketing services, told The Guardian in an interview.
