RBS, Natwest Launch Visa Mobile Transfer Service

Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest are launching a new mobile payments service, in partnership with Visa Europe. The service will allow the two banks’ customers to send money to anyone with a Visa card.

The service will be available through the Natwest and RBS mobile apps. Customers will be able to transfer up to £100 to anyone with a Visa card and a UK phone number. Recipients will receive a message with a link to a secure Visa website, where they will be offered to enter their card number and the amount to receive the payment. This way, the received and the sender do not need to exchange payment details.

“This safe and convenient tool will encourage yet more people to make the most of mobile banking, helping our customers to bank anywhere, whenever they want,” said Ben Greenm head of mobile at RBS and Natwest, speaking to the Guardian. If the trial goes well, the service could be expanded to cross-border payments, the banks have said.

The service is not available to all of the banks’ customers yet. With the less than smooth launch of their GetCash mobile app, the two banks decided to begin with a soft launch – targeting a select group of customers.
