Earlier this week, PYMNTS reported that Apple was launching a new service in Japan that allowed users to load credit for purchases in the iTunes store using Apple retail establishments.
It seems that Apple’s plans were somewhat bigger than initially stated, as iPhoneHacks has reported that the iTunes Pass service began the roll out of the U.S. extension of the program today.

The service allows any user who has added the iTunes Pass to their Passbook to directly add funds to their iTunes accounts without making use of a separate gift card—functioning similarly to how the Starbucks app works today.
Earlier this year, there was wide speculation that Apple was working on its own mobile payments service, which initially seemed similar in concept to the new iTunes Pass program. Future instantiations of the service are hypothesizing to additionally allow pass holders to use their devices to purchase physical goods on the web and in retail stores.
