Apple Gets iWatch Patent

The USPTO issued Apple a patent covering several types of smartwatch devices, including a modular design that has a smart strap with built-in sensors that can host personal media devices, i.e. the iPod nano, according to TechCrunch.

The new patent calls the device “iTime,” similar to the rumored iWatch. It has a central removable unit that disconnects from its strap, and the strap itself “which could add features to the central component, including GPS modules, Wi-Fi radios and haptic feedback motors for vibration notifications.”

The device also will have the ability to transfer data between itself and an iPad or iPhone, the patent says, and the design resembles “a typical wrist strap for the older sixth-gen iPod nano.” Apple also indicated that gesture controls might be incorporated, letting users answer calls by flicking their wrists.
