Over 51% of Tanzania Use MPESA

Vodacom M-Pesa customers grew 21.6% y-o-y in the quarter ended in March 2014 to reach 6M internationally, while Tanzania now makes 18.8% of revenues (+470 bps vs. 2013). 4.9M or 51.6% of Vodacom users in the country are actively using M-Pesa.

The firm revealed it has globally 200k active agents processing 2.8Bn transactions a year. The management showed commitment to expanding internationally with South Africa and India as priorities. In India M-Pesa counts with 56k agents who cover 65% of rural areas vs. 5% for traditional banking institutions. Serpil Timuray,Regional CEO Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific Region said: “In India it’s very early days, but we’ve already hit 1 million customers.”

“M-Pesa has been launched in all our international markets and our priority has been to increase the number of registered users and to drive activity levels by widening distribution and expanding the ecosystem in each market,” Vodacom said.
