How Apple Might Target Shoppers By Price Points

Apple is reportedly working on another service that might change how commerce is conducted.

That service? An eCommerce system that pushes out products to customers based on how much they can actually afford. Yes, it appears from a patent application filed yesterday (July 16) that Apple is getting into data to enable advertisers to better target shoppers.

The new patent details that the system would work sending targeted ads to a mobile phone based on what those consumers can afford based on their creditworthiness. This new data-driven advertising tactic could be one way Apple can break its way further into mobile ads.

Here’s how Apple described the perks of the eCommerce system: “An advantage of such targeted advertising is that only advertisements for goods and services which particular users can afford are delivered to these users.”

The interesting feature, which may also be a hit with consumers, would be that it tracks users’ credit and debit card balances and helps send ads based on what those users can afford. And because most ads are pitched to consumers about what they want to buy, Apple has flipped the concept and instead come up with the idea to have those ads be pitches based on what consumers can actually buy (in theory).

Other explanations shared in the patent include: “The delivery element is arranged such that the content item [ad] delivered to the user includes only one or more objects having a purchase price less than or equal to the available credit for that user … An advantage of such targeted advertising is that advertisements for goods and services which particular users cannot afford are not delivered to these users.”
