PayPal said on Tuesday (Aug. 11) that NFC-enabled PayPal Here readers are now available in the United Kingdom.
The company has said that its readers accept contactless payments across Maestro, Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards, in addition to Apple Pay.
The reader is available from the PayPal site, with a “pay-as-you-go solution” in place for small businesses, which in turn eliminates monthly fees. The model entails a one-time fee with the reader, and then a small payment comes with each transaction made through the reader. PayPal says the reader sports a screen that streamlines the interaction with smartphones and tablets.
In the Tuesday release, PayPal said its PayPal Here technology will process chip-and-PIN payments — in addition to those processed through the magnetic stripe. And there are other services working with the tech platform, such as invoice and receipt processing, as well as cash management.
In the statement announcing the U.K. debut, Cameron McLean, managing director of PayPal UK, stated: “Contactless payments are taking off in Britain, with over 58 million contactless cards in use and spending on them trebling in 2014. The new PayPal Here card reader is a game-changer for businesses wanting to respond to customer demand for ‘tap-and-go’ payments.”
“It also accepts Apple Pay transactions, so the smallest of businesses can now offer the latest way to pay wherever they trade. It’s the latest example of how PayPal’s innovations in mobile payments are helping British businesses to succeed.”
The PayPal Here mobile app, as has been the case with PayPal, is free and available from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store. The PayPal Here card reader can then be synced wirelessly to smartphones or tablets.
