PYMNTS reported in October 2024 that Runway gained attention for its text-to-video capabilities and was competing with companies such as Adobe in the growing field of artificial intelligence-powered video tools.

“Runway is the world model company,” Germanidis said in the post. “We power the daily work of more than 60 million creators and 95% of the Fortune 100. From award-winning films and ad campaigns to real-time media applications to generalist robotics. Our largest customers are increasingly licensing our frontier models directly.”

Runway announced in a Tuesday press release that the team from Paris-based AI research lab Kinetix is joining Runway. Kinetix works on 3D human motion and physically grounded video generation, and the team will help drive Runway’s research into world models for robotics, according to the release.

“Robotics is going to be one of the biggest applications of world models, and it’s an area we’re deeply focused on,” Germanidis said in the release. “We’ve spent years teaching models to understand and simulate the world. The next step is teaching them how to take actions in the world, and the Kinetix team will be instrumental in our work here.”

Runway announced in February that it raised $315 million in a Series E funding round and would use the new capital to pre-train the next generation of world models and bring them to new products and industries.

“World models are the most transformative technology of our time,” Runway Co-Founder and Co-CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said in a February press release. “Our mission is to accelerate their development and ensure they have a positive impact on the world.”
