Large corporations are racing ahead in payment guarantee adoption while middle-market organizations hesitate over technical hurdles and upfront expenses across the evolving digital economy.
The PYMNTS Intelligence report “The Payment Guarantee Gap: Why Adoption Lags Despite Perceived Value,” a collaboration with Plaid, found in October that 85% of the largest firms with $5 billion or more in annual revenue evaluated or used a payment guarantee service compared to only 47% of middle-market businesses.
Many companies struggled to bridge the distance between digital ambition and daily execution, the report found. While corporate executives acknowledged that payment guarantees can streamline back-office workflows, persistent worries about software deployment and fee structures meant firms didn’t always act on their beliefs. Companies often found themselves stuck because they relied on legacy internal controls instead of embracing what was new. Treasury teams frequently balanced competing budget priorities when evaluating new software categories, and many organizations struggled to measure expected return on investment.

Key findings from the report:
- Real-time, irrevocable payments raised the stakes of pre-transaction certainty and drove intent to adopt or expand payment guarantee use. Of firms that adapted to these payments, 72% expected to adopt or expand guarantee use, compared to 22% of those who did not adapt.
- Technical friction slowed industry momentum since 74% of organizations cited integration complexity as their primary roadblock, while 73% considered their existing internal controls to be sufficient and 64% pointed to the price of guarantee fees relative to expected benefits as a major deterrent.
- Customer relationships suffered collateral damage because 45% of firms experienced increased customer churn and 63% faced higher support costs when incoming payment failures disrupted the buyer journey.
Despite these initial obstacles, finance leaders are discovering practical ways forward by targeting high-risk transaction flows and building internal readiness.
Nearly half of all surveyed businesses said they plan to adopt or expand their payment guarantee usage within the next 24 months.
Firms operating in money-movement-intensive sectors found that robust risk signals and proactive pilot programs could turn payment reliability into a driver for customer trust and sustainable growth. Additional research indicated that regulatory and compliance concerns affected 54% of non-adopting companies, proving that navigating legal frameworks remained a priority for FinTech professionals aiming to scale securely.
Companies that embrace these protective layers will likely unlock smoother operations, happier clients and stronger financial performance across the entire digital economy. Industry participants who take early action can establish a competitive edge.
