Midwest Retailer Meijer Signs With Instacart For Grocery Delivery

Online delivery platform Instacart is teaming up with regional Midwest retailer Meijer to provide same-day delivery of groceries.

"Customers rely on Instacart to get the groceries and goods they need from the retailers they love," Instacart President Nilam Ganenthiran said in a Thursday (Dec. 3) press release"Meijer is an iconic, family-owned grocer that has served families across the Midwest for more than 85 years. Through our new partnership, we're bringing Meijer's incredible selection online for customers, giving Meijer customers access to everything they need from the comfort and safety of their home."

Instacart will deliver everything Meijer carries, from groceries and household essentials to home decor, electronics and more. The new service is now available for Meijer customers in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin. Instacart said it partners with over 500 merchants and makes deliveries from almost 40,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada. The platform is available to 85 percent of U.S. households and 70 percent of Canadian, in over 5,500 North American cities.

Instacart recently teamed up with Aldi to offer EBT SNAP payments for eCommerce and supermarket delivery and pickup. People who receive EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) can now get food and staples delivered same-day. The program is launching initially at Aldi’s 60-plus Georgia stores, with plans to expand to more than 570 locations in California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Instacart is planning a 2021 initial public offering (IPO) led by Goldman Sachs on a valuation of about $30 billion. The Silicon Valley startup has raised a total of $2.4 billion across more than 14 funding rounds. PYMNTS research shows that 85.3 percent of consumers who are having groceries delivered plan to continue at least some of their digital shopping habits beyond the pandemic.
