Tech Startup Mickey Merges With B2B Marketplace MaterialsXchange to Form Lumber Exchange

Mickey, a tech startup digitizing the trading of physical commodities, has joined with B2B eCommerce and digital marketplace MaterialsXchange, which matches lumber buyers and sellers across the U.S. and Canada, a press release said Thursday (Sept. 1).

This will expand Mickey’s footprint into the commodity lumber verticals.

MaterialsXchange Co-Founder and CEO Mike Wisnefski will become president of Mickey Group, while Ashley Boeckholt, co-founder and CRO with MaterialsXchange, continues in that role with Mickey.

“Today is a momentous day for Mickey,” said Alex Rabens, Mickey’s co-founder and CEO. “MaterialsXchange has spent the last few years developing an amazing front-end platform that has served the lumber industry well. Combining their experienced team and platform with our back-end technology, we have created a true, end-to-end solution for the lumber market — as well as other commodities in the long-term.” Rabens said, “Our companies are complementary and together we will improve the supply chain for North American manufacturers, as well as help building product dealers and construction companies source the materials they need in a completely transparent and seamless transaction.”

PYMNTS quoted Rabens in May saying that the company’s formation in 2019 came because there was a ripe opportunity to modernize buying lumber.

“If you were to want to go buy lumber, you cannot do it online, you can’t do it without a phone, and you probably can’t do it without a truck,” he said.

This came as Mickey was rolling out a new B2B platform, which would connect lumber producers with manufacturers, builders and other buyers, providing real-time inventories, an automated fulfillment process and end-to-end purchasing.

Rabens said collections was among the chores that the platform could help automate.
