Visa Canada, DoorDash Deliver Real-Time Payments via Stripe

Visa on Wednesday (March 23) announced DoorDash Fast Pay, a new feature that’s part of its collaboration with delivery platform DoorDash that enables faster payouts to drivers across Canada, according to a joint press release.

DoorDash Fast Pay is powered by Stripe’s Instant Payouts portal and Visa Direct, Visa’s real-time push payments platform. It is being launched to meet the needs of short-term contractors, with one in 10 Canadian adults identifying as an independent contractor.

Visa’s survey of gig workers showed that almost nine out of every 10 (89%) said they’re likely to sign up for real-time payments, and two-thirds (66%) said they would select gig companies who offer real-time payments instead of others.

“Increasingly, independent contractors want to be paid on their own terms,” said Jim Filice, VP and head of new payments at Visa Canada. “Getting access to earned wages in real-time is an expectation for many workers, and companies like DoorDash are helping to meet that demand by leveraging Visa’s network and implementing solutions like Fast Pay.”

DoorDash is using Instant Payouts with Stripe Connect in the U.S. and Canada, to allow Dashers accept payments and direct them to their debit cards or bank accounts and help businesses create a platform for purchases and payments between third-party buyers and sellers.

Shilpa Arora, general manager at DoorDash Canada, called the collaboration “a major step forward in introducing new tools to empower Dashers who count on DoorDash for reliable, independent and flexible work and additional income” in the press release.

DoorDash’s delivery workers normally receive weekly paychecks, but under the Fast Pay program, U.S. delivery workers can cash out their current earnings once each day for a $1.99 fee. The funds are not deposited directly to workers’ bank accounts but are instead pushed to their debit cards.
