Restaurant payment startup sunday has acquired contactless payments firm CHK PLZ to advance expansion across North America, according to a press release on Wednesday (Oct. 20).

Launched this year by Victor Lugger, Tigrane Seydoux and Christine de Wendel, sunday snapped up CHK PLZ to help drive the startup’s mission of bringing technology to all eateries. Its goal is to help restaurants advance efficiency while also increasing sales and improving the overall experience for indoor diners.

The point of sale (POS) services offered by sunday reduces the duration of customers’ bill-paying process to about 10 seconds from 15 minutes.

“sunday and CHK PLZ both share the same passion for local restaurants and operate on the same basic principle of supporting local restaurants to survive in a post-pandemic world,” said Victor Lugger, sunday’s co-founder. “The acquisition was a natural fit.”

More than 1,500 restaurants worldwide signed on with sunday between April and September, transacting some $2 billion CAD from 1.1 million end users.

“The way people pay in restaurants is changing for good,” Lugger added. “The intuition our team had five months ago is testament to a global trend supporting restaurant owners, their staff and their clients, from quick service to Michelin-star restaurants.”

The CHK PLZ acquisition comes on the heels of sunday’s $100 million Series A funding round in September.

Founded in 2018 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by Roberto Casoli, who serves as the company’s CEO, CHK PLZ grew its product offering during the pandemic from QR-based payments to on-table ordering and online ordering and delivery.

Casoli said that the two companies as a comingled entity can use technology to help bars and eateries nationwide.

“We firmly believe that technology will be the saving grace during these times of uncertainty,” Casoli said. “Together, CHK PLZ and sunday can usher in real change to introduce the North American market to the future of hospitality.”
