Facebook Messenger Users Can Now Add Amex Card

American Express announced Monday (Dec. 12) it has added a new feature to its Amex bot for Facebook Messenger. In a press release, American Express said it included a new “Add a Card” feature in the bot for Messenger to help eligible U.S. and OPEN cardmembers to add their card and billing information to make purchases on Facebook.

American Express said that, after adding a card to their Facebook accounts, cardmembers can make in-game purchases, buy things on the Shop sections of business Facebook pages and take part in Messenger commerce experiences.

“This most recent step in our long relationship with Facebook demonstrates just how quickly American Express can iterate new features and develop innovation with great partners,” said Dave Wolf, vice president of digital partnerships and development at American Express, in the press release. “The speed of our tech development continues to allow us to meet our cardmembers where they are, and we look forward to the additional benefits we can deliver to cardmembers on this powerful channel.”

Meanwhile, Kahina Van Dyke, Facebook’s director of global commerce and payments partnerships, said in the same press release that the addition of the Amex button in Messenger comes at a time when Facebook and Messenger are introducing new commerce initiatives. “We’ve seen commerce play an increasing role in how people interact with one another, and we’re excited to see our partners at Amex continue to create new ways to enable people to make seamless purchases with this new Add a Card feature,” said Van Dyke.

In September, Facebook announced its chatbot service is now commerce-enabled. At the TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2016 event, David Marcus, VP of messaging products at Facebook, explained that users will no longer be sent to an external website because Messenger bots will be able to facilitate payments natively.
