“I’m excited to share that we’re working with Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover to enable buyers to securely use Shop Pay at any merchant, whether it runs on Shopify or not,” Rohit Mishra, Shopify’s vice president of product, wrote in an X post Wednesday (Oct. 28). “The agent never sees the buyer’s card. Buyers keep rewards, protection and experience that they expect. Together we’re making shopping with an agent secure and fast. Our ambition is simple. That company issues a single-use virtual card for agents connected to the cardholder’s account. The Information report said this approach has caused concern among card networks because it can lessen their control over the shopping and payment process and make it tougher to link the user with the actual purchase.

Shopify announced last month that it had begun allowing browser agents to check out on the websites of its eligible merchants. The company had already permitted agents to search through items, browse collections and add products to a cart through structured tools using the platform’s support for WebMCP for storefront and carts.

Research from the PYMNTS Intelligence report “Global Digital Shopping Index: The Agentic Commerce Deep Dive” shows that 56% of shoppers will permit an agent to search and compare products on their behalf, with 35% willing to give an agent access to their saved payment credentials.

“Decisions being made now about standards, liability, certification and infrastructure investment will determine who is well-positioned as the agentic commerce shift accelerates in the next few years,” the report said.

Visa CEO Ryan McInerney described the gap between shopping and payment at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference last month.

“We are seeing adoption for shopping, but not yet for autonomous payments,” he said, according to PYMNTS’ coverage of his talk. “The barrier to that, if I had to describe it in one word, would be trust.”
