BJ’s Wholesale Club Opens Smaller BJ’s Market in Warwick, RI

BJ’s Wholesale Club on Friday (April 29) opened its first BJ’s market concept club in Warwick, Rhode Island, unveiling a location that’s 43,000 square feet, about half the size of its full-sized clubs and features fresh foods, produce, sundries and seasonal products for BJ’s members.

“BJ’s market will serve as an exciting new innovation lab for BJ’s Wholesale Club,” said Bill Werner, executive vice president, strategy and development, in the BJ’s Wholesale Club company announcement. “We are bringing the same great savings and value our members know and love but delivering a convenient location closer to home.”

BJ’s market will offer the same pack sizes and pricing as BJ’s clubs, along with curbside pick-up, Express Pay and same-day delivery. A one-year BJ’s Inner Circle membership is $25 for new members, while a one-year BJ’s Perks Rewards membership costs $65.

The BJ’s market will serve as a testing ground for new product assortments, displays, demonstrations and convenience initiatives, the company announcement says.

BJ’s Charitable Foundation has donated $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick and $15,000 to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in connection with the BJ’s market opening.

“We are so thankful for BJ’s generous donation and can’t wait to welcome them to our Warwick Community,” said Lara D’Antuono, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick, in the announcement. “Donations like this are critical to the success of the programs that we run for our youth and we are thrilled to receive BJ’s support.”

Last month, DoorDash announced the addition of the first wholesale club to its platform, making BJ’s Wholesale Club available for purchase through the DoorDash marketplace to both BJ’s members and non-members, offering lower prices to the former if they link their club card.

Nearly one in four consumers use DoorDash aggregators, according to findings from the December edition of PYMNTS’ Digital Divide report, “The Digital Divide: Delivery Service Aggregators And The Digital Shift,” created in collaboration with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) customer experience management (CXM) solutions provider Paytronix.
