Macy’s on Wednesday (July 20) announced it’s opening four small-format stores outside its traditional mall locations, including Market by Macy’s — which features curated fashion collections — and a combo Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage discount retail location.
“At Macy’s, we thrive on retail being a dynamic business requiring continuous analysis, reinvention and innovation,” said Marc Mastronardi, Chief Stores Officer at Macy’s, in the company press release. “As customer preferences and buying behaviors change, we continue to evolve to deliver the experience our customers expect.”
“As exciting brand extensions, Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage each offer unique shopping experiences – one celebrates discovery and convenience, while the other appeals to the customer who loves the thrill of the hunt for a great value,” he said.
Market by Macy’s will open in Johns Creek Town Center on Aug. 20 in Suwanee, Georgia, the third location in the metro Atlanta area. It will make its St. Louis area debut with an immersive shopping space in Chesterfield Commons, according to the company press release. Macy’s is closing its Chesterfield store as part of the shift to the Market by Macy’s store.
The dual Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage store will debut this fall in Chicagoland, featuring Market by Macy’s on the first floor and Backstage on the second floor.
Macy’s Backstage has grown to more than 300 nationwide locations since 2015, while Market by Macy’s will reach eight total locations by the end of 2022 after debuting in 2020 in the Dallas-Forth Worth area.

Earlier this week, Macy’s announced plans to bring Toys R Us to every U.S. store this holiday season, starting in late July and rolling out through mid-October, after the formerly bankrupt retail chain broadened its partnership with WHP Global.
The move will bring toy stores ranging from 1,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet to Macy’s outlets. The largest locations will be in Macy’s flagships in Atlanta, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. The store footprint could grow another 500 to 3,000 square feet during the holiday shopping season.
Stores will feature displays and hands-on demonstration tables for customers to interact with some of the toys they might buy for themselves or one of their loved ones. Each store will also have a life-sized Geoffrey on a Bench photo opportunity with the iconic cartoon giraffe mascot.
