Shopify already enabled agents to search products, browse collections and add items to a cart through structured tools via the platform’s support for WebMCP for storefront and carts, according to the article.

Now, Shopify also allows agents to read the checkout, update it and submit it with the buyer’s authorization via WebMCP support for checkout, including Shopify’s Shop Pay, per the article.

“Shopify exposes structured commerce APIs via the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), that enables agents to discover products, build carts and checkout,” Greenberg told builders of browsers agents in the article. “UCP is the shared language that hosted MCPs and WebMCP both speak to. There are different access methods to the same protocol, to support wherever your agent runs.”

This announcement came a week after Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke said that the company partnered with Meta to enable that firm’s Muse agent to shop and check out with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores.

Shopify announced in a Monday post on X that it also allows Instinct’s personal agent to shop and check out with Shop Pay.

Instinct Founder Noah Shinn also announced the collaboration Monday, saying in a post on X that Instinct users can now have product discovery, checkout and order updates in one conversation.

“Instinct can now search Shopify’s merchant network for products, and find live information on prices, sizes and availability,” Shinn said. “When you’re ready to buy, Instinct sets up your order with the store so you can check out with Shop Pay using your saved payment and shipping details.”

The PYMNTS Intelligence report “Global Digital Shopping Index: The Agentic Commerce Deep Dive” found that 56% of consumers will let an agent search and compare products on their behalf, and 35% will grant an agent access to their saved payment credentials.

“Decisions being made now about standards, liability, certification and infrastructure investment will determine who is well-positioned as the agentic commerce shift accelerates in the next few years,” the report said.
