Streaming App Provider Ranking Doesn’t Like It When You Change Channels Too Much

Netflix App

We watch too much TV. Like, entirely too much. Don’t be concerned. It’s not pandemic-related.

We just love TV. Always have. Inductive reasoning therefore dictates that we must simply adore streaming TV apps (do we ever). We can no longer imagine a world without it. So obsessed are we, in fact, that each month statisticians and journalists create PYMNTS’ Provider Ranking of Streaming Apps just to read and reread, much as one binges a series on streaming TV.

Now that we’ve established our love of filmed entertainment, music and games consumed on a collection of digital devices, let’s have a fruit smoothie and see what’s trending this month.

Just one quick thing: shush. We happen to love this particular show.

The Top Five

We didn’t know if it would last — and it didn’t. Netflix reclaims the No. 1 title after being bumped out last month. That was pretty exciting as things go around here.

The app that unseated Netflix last month falls to No. 2, and it’s Google’s YouTube. This may be a rivalry to watch, as YouTube has big expansion plans. And it’s already huge.

At No. 3 once again is Disney+, with “Black Widow” and other great shows keeping it aloft.

There are watchers and there are listeners. For the latter, we’ve got Spotify: Music and Podcasts making happy sounds at No. 4.

Amazon is everywhere, including TV, so we find Amazon Prime Video safely nestled at No. 5 for another cycle, just waiting for you to rent something. That’s the Bezos “flywheel” in action.

The Top 10

We’ll admit that this episode started out well, but it gets a little dull toward the middle, as so few apps changed position since last time we held this little watch party.

Still circling at No. 6, it’s Pluto TV — Live TV and Movies — free, ad-supported and on-demand.

More lack of movement is detected at No. 7, as Hulu hangs in another cycle. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher that this hugely popular app doesn’t rank higher. There’s always next month.

Proving the omnipresence of a certain company, we only made it down three chart positions until we encountered Amazon Music, which took No. 8 a cycle or two ago and is sticking.

Here’s a slight plot twist: Twitch: Live Game Streaming moves up a spot to No. 9. Cool app.

Still fun despite dropping one chart position iss the Funimation app, which “specializes in the dubbing and distribution of East Asian media, most notably Japanese anime.”

There’s a market for all kinds of app-based entertainment — including dubbing East Asian media. That’s why it’s such a fun business.

Now that we’ve wrapped the Provider Ranking of Streaming Apps, what are we watching?
