Toast Fuel gives operators a single and connected platform for in-store and at-the-pump fuel payments as well as retail and food service, per the release.

“Convenience stores sell an estimated 80% of the fuel purchased by consumers in the United States,” Toast said in the release, citing National Association of Convenience Stores data. “Many of those convenience store operators run their in-store retail and fuel businesses on two disconnected systems and have had little access to the cloud-based tools that have helped reshape restaurants and retailers over the past decade.”

At the same time, convenience stores often function like quick-service restaurants, offering made-to-order food, digital ordering, and loyalty programs alongside standard fuel and retail sales, according to the release.

“As that convergence accelerates, Toast, which already serves a large base of retail and restaurant operators, is extending its proven cloud-native platform to the forecourt, bringing pump control onto the same system already powering the store, so fuel, retail, payments, food service, marketing, inventory and team management run in one place,” the release said.

Among Toast Fuel’s offerings are a “dedicated forecourt interface” for cashiers, including a real-time pump dashboard and the ability to authorize or stop a pump, according to the release.

For stores running a “more robust food program,” Toast Fuel features the same trusted kitchen automation technology designed for Toast’s roughly 180,000 customer locations, including kitchen display systems, digital menus, online ordering, drive-thru and delivery, the release said.

Toast’s second-quarter earnings report, released Aug. 4, suggested the company is moving into a new phase, PYMNTS reported. For years, Toast was focused on adding more restaurants to its platform and growing payments volume. Now, Toast believes artificial intelligence can strengthen customer relationships, produce new revenue streams and make its software indispensable to restaurateurs.

CEO Aman Narang pointed to the company’s growing customer base while stressing that AI is moving beyond experimentation into tools that restaurants are already paying to use.
