Earlier this week, Amazon announced that its China branch will now be open to Japan and Canada. The move increases the cross-border options to a total of eight, according to an Internet Retailer article.
The news source reported that Ye Weilun, vice president of Amazon China’s third-party platform, made the announcement at the 2014 Chinese Consumer Brands E-Commerce Summit.
According to Ye, Amazon China began facilitating sales on its marketplaces outside of China in 2012. The organization calls the program “open store in the world,” and its sales have been quickly growing.
“The number of Chinese retailers selling to overseas consumers on Amazon’s platform increased 196 percent to more than 1,000 in 2013. For Chinese merchants on Amazon, their sales from overseas markets grew 64 percent in 2013,” he said.
Internet Retailer cited data from web measurement firm comScore Inc., which explained that Amazon’s Japan e-commerce site attracts 4.8 million visitors each month. Additionally, according to Ye, Amazon provides Chinese sellers with Japanese-speaking customer service agents and marketing services in Japan.
Amazon continues to make headlines. Just last week, the rumors swirled about the online retailer potentially having a marketplace for local services later this year, which would likely rival other sites such as Thumbtacks, Angie’s List and Yelp.
